Lab: Where Did My File Go?

NameDatePeriod

A lot of lost work is not really lost. It is saved somewhere nobody can remember, under a name like "Untitled document (3)." Today you will learn to save your work on purpose, name it so anyone can find it, and get it back when it seems to be gone. You will use these habits in every class, not just this one.

Part A. Find the File

  1. Open Find the File on your Chromebook and do all six jobs. Each job checks itself when it is done.
  2. Write the full path of the essay you saved in job 1.

Part B. Your real Google Drive

  1. In Google Drive, make a folder for this course. Inside it, make one folder for each unit your teacher lists.
  2. Find a file you own with "Untitled" in its name. Rename it using the class rule: what it is, then the date, such as "Lab sheet 2027-01-12."
  3. Move that file into the right unit folder.
  4. Use the search bar to find the sample file in the class folder. Write its name below.

Part C. Five shortcuts

  1. Try each shortcut, and have your partner initial the box when you can do it without looking at this sheet.
ShortcutWhat it doesPartner
Ctrl + C, then Ctrl + VCopy, then paste
Ctrl + ZUndo the last thing you did
Ctrl + FFind a word on the page
Ctrl + SSave (in apps that save by hand)
Ctrl + Shift + TReopen a tab you closed by mistake

Think about it

Your file is in the Trash. Explain to a younger student, in two or three sentences, how to get it back and why it is not gone yet.
