MuggsTech · Course 2: IT Support Technician · Day 2

Lab: Broken on Purpose

NameDatePeriod

Your teacher broke four computers before class. Each one comes with a help-desk ticket written the way real users talk, which usually means it does not say what is actually wrong. Your job is to work the six-step method, fix the problem, and write notes good enough that another technician could read them and know exactly what happened.

The six steps

  1. Identify the problem. Ask the user questions, find out what changed, and back up data before you make changes if you can.
  2. Establish a theory of probable cause. Question the obvious.
  3. Test the theory to determine the cause. If it is wrong, form a new theory or escalate.
  4. Establish a plan of action to resolve the problem, and implement the solution.
  5. Verify full system functionality and, if it applies, put preventive measures in place.
  6. Document findings, actions and outcomes.

At every station

  1. Read the ticket card. Your teacher is the user, so ask them questions before you touch anything.
  2. Write your theory down before you test it. If the first theory is wrong, write the next one.
  3. When it works, check everything works, not just the thing the user mentioned.
  4. Fill in the ticket notes. Write them for a technician who was not there.
